| Dr. Abdel Ghaly is granted the CSAE/SCGR
grade of Fellow, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the
Engineering profession in general and the Agricultural Engineering profession
in particular. His teaching excellence, innovative research ideas, leadership,
service to international communities and expertise in many areas of Agricultural
Engineering have benefited students, research literature and farming communities
around the world. He has developed and directed several major international
projects for Human Resource Development and Transfer of Technology in several
countries in Asia, Africa, South America and the Caribbean.
Dr. Ghaly received a Bachelor's degree (1969) and a Masters' degree (1973) from Alexandria University, Egypt. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from McGill University, Canada, in 1982. Dr. Ghaly's teaching and research career began at Alexandria University in 1969. Ten years later, he joined the University of Manitoba to work on an International Project funded by CIDA, in Zambia, where he served as an Assistant Professor and Head of the Agricultural Engineering Department at the University of Zambia. In 1982, Dr. Ghaly joined the Technical University of Nova Scotia (TUNS) as an Associate Professor. He is currently a Professor in the Biological Engineering Department at Dalhousie University. Dr. Ghaly is well known in his local community and around the world through his many invited lectures, radio interviews, newspaper communications on research topics, publications and as a guest speaker at International Conferences. The impact of Dr. Ghaly's professional activities is far-reaching, going beyond North America to several countries in Asia, South America and the Caribbean. His international projects have been supported by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the International Development Research Council (IDRC), the World Bank, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Netherlands Universities International Cooperation Program, and the German Academic Exchange Service. These projects have contributed in improving the quality of life of many people in developing countries. Dr. Ghaly has 400 refereed publications, conference proceedings, conference papers and technical reports on his research, in addition to a long list of his design and construction projects overseas. Dr. Ghaly was presented with the Young Engineer of the Year Award by the ASAE-NAR in 1988, the CSAE/SCGR John Clark Award in 1992, the Shield of Achievements in 1990, the Gold Jubilee Award in 1992 and the Recognition Gold Medal in 1993 (all three awards from Alexandria University), the ASAE Kishida International Award in 2000, and the Distinguished Service Award by ASAE-NABEC in 2002 for his outstanding teaching and research. Dr. Ghaly has been active in regional, national and international engineering and science organizations. Some renowned positions include President of CSAE/SCGR and member of the Board of Trustees of ASAE. He has organized and chaired several sessions at the Annual Meetings of ASAE, NABEC and AIChE, and has participated in organizing several international conferences. His active involvement in ASAE includes service to 16 Technical Committees, and Meetings and Membership Development Councils. His vision and dedicated leadership as CSAE/SCGR President (2000-2001) helped transform the Society and brought it in line with current developments. He actively promoted and communicated Agricultural, Food and Environmental Engineering, not only as President of CSAE but also as a Professor--to students, policy makers, the news media and the public. The significant increase in CSAE/SCGR membership during his tenure as President is one of the many indicators of his excellent leadership and communication skills. Dr. Ghaly has also been very actively involved in other organizations
such as the American Society for the Advancement of Science, and the Association
for the Advancement of Agricultural Science in Africa. He is currently
serving as Associate Editor, Editor and member of the Editorial Board
of several international journals. |
